When my N100 (non-Minisforum brand) died after a couple of years, I needed a replacement, but in the current AI-caused hardware price skyrocketing, I decided to buy a very-reasonably priced refurbished, bare-bones Minisforum UM870, and populate it with the RAM and NVME from the dead minipc. Everything went wonderfully and for various reasons I ran Windows 11, then Linux Mint Cinammon. The UM870 was WAY more responsive then the old N100 it replaced! I decided to replace my 10+ year old DIY NAS setup with the UM870 and a DAS box running ZimaOS+ and again, things are running just fine! At some point in the not distant future, I may replace this setup with a proper NAS - the N5 Air, but for the near term, the UM870 w/ DAS is performing quite well! I am very satisfied with my purchase of the refurb UM870!
Turned into a great gaming rig and work pc for my wife. Paired this with a DEG1 eGPU dock and 3070Ti GPU. Used the 2nd m.2 with a M.2 to Oculink adapter and it runs great. Quiet, Fast and in amazing condition.
I would absolutely buy another one.
This is a nice little pc which is now my desktop pc. I decided to get this since it was less than the price of a stick of 16gig ddr5 ram. I do need some ram for my new build but decided on this instead and just moved my drive and memory to this system. The only problem is that I had to also buy a new wifi7 amd compatible wifi card in order to use it with linux. The included wifi card I guess only works with windows which is now what I'm using with it. Another thing I don't like is the super bright blue power LED. It's annoying but I just put take over for now. And the screws that are under the rubber feet that you have to remove first. Not a huge deal but I think they can do better there so that you don't need to take those off. These mini pcs could also use at least 4 or 5 rear usb ports. The two usb 2 ports are use by my keyboard and mouse. Luckily I had a usb c hub card reader that I am using to plug in my speaker and mic to. My center speaker also has another usb cable coming out that also needed a port. This allowed me to keep the wires off the front for now. I would prefer the mic and sound ports to be separate since I had problems with a similar single port dual use on my other machine trying to capture audio and video in OBS. Hence the usb sound adapter I had to add. It's just something a bit annoying but this is why I mention them. I also updated the bios to the latest just to be be up to date and so far my new desktop is working great. Oh I forgot to mention that the whole cover is plastic, I thought it was all aluminum but it's not. It would be nice if these were aluminum. So far I do like it. You can check my review on youtube.
Awesome piece of hardware, nicely compacted, and even their refurb unit is purring like a kitten, no issues.
